The Kreig W. Garrett Resort & Casino
Run 1: The Gig Economy #
Players entered into the Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse) to find a splenderous resort run by a most curious staff. After a series of disappearances and an attack on a guest rocked the KWG, these adventurers responded to a request for investigators in return for aid to Hireling Hall. "Nonna", Minerva, Oh'Pah, Ailin, Thulsa, Ulzor, and Xzar entered into the picture.
They first encountered the stubborn, middle-manager tyrant Joel Stanch, who granted them their initial Garrett dollars and introduced them to the KWG rewards Program. While general interest was expressed in making purchases and earning rewards points, Xzar took a particular liking to the Rewards Program's possibilities. The party then met Miss Caroline, the loyal and enthusiastic right-hand-woman of Krieg W. Garrett, who explained to them the disappearances of line cooks Phyllis and Gerald.
They ended up having lunch with Krieg W. Garrett himself at the Gil-Garrett Culinary Experience, who proved a mysterious and eccentric host as he provided information to them on the disappearances.
Exploration of the Resort&Casino(+Bathhouse) led them to meet with Henry Frick, a cruel old crook who owned the Iron Company and became one of the few people Nonna has said "I don't like you... I'm not your nonna." Henry Frick had come into ownership of the Iron Company thanks to his nephew, Miles Appleton Nelson, and had gambled away their savings at the KWG casino, leading him to pay for his luxorious lifestyle at Miles' expense by forcing the Iron Company to work as security service for the Resort&Casino(+Bathhouse). The party also met his nephew, Miles Appleton Nelson, who some recognized as the former protoge of Dokoi, head of the Shovel Skulls, who'd fallen into mercenary work since his exile. They learned the monstrous, purple-eyed versions of the missing Phyllis and Gerald attacked a guest at night between 3-5am as a mysterious voice sung in the halls.
The party followed the clues to the mystery around the casino, meeting more of its inhabitants including Kibble, a five-year-old kobold who told them of the underground networks beneath the Resort&Casino(+Bathhouse) that he explored with his rat friends. The party then planned a stakeout with Miles Nelson at 3am, using Nonna as bait. Although they were suspicious of the Iron Company and Miles, as they believed Henry Frick may be involved in the disappearances, they went through with it and were ambushed by possessed versions of Phyllis, Gerald, and Chef Jeff "Gil" Krill.
In a twist, Chef Jeff "Gil" Krill, now Chef Jeff "Gil" Kill told them "you shouldn't have eaten the food" and activated his trap, as hidden enchantments in the food they ate earlier suddenly caused all but Ailin Hollum to fall unconscious (who was still in wildshape form as an owl). The party was brought into an underground kitchen and tied up, dangling above a soup being prepared for them by the mad chef. With Ailin observing the room, the party sprung awake and suddenly cut free of restraints with Thulsa's spiderback rig and jumped out of falling into the soup (besides Oh'Pah and Thulsa). They cut down Gerald and Phyllis, and knocked out Chef Jeff "Gil" Krill was returned from possession, broken free of the control of a being that called itself "Horus". The being, in its last moments, told them it was going to tear down the KWGR&C(+B), destroying the blasted "castle of decadence".
Henry Frick entered in, with his nephew Miles having fought off the remaining possessed ghosts, and demanded Chef Gil be executed. The party denied it, seeing it as a way to get rid of witnesses of his involvement in the plot. They left the KWGR&C(+B) successful but with perhaps more questions than answers, leaving a note to other parties: "Do not trust Henry Frick"
Well… I should say some left. In order to earn his major Garrett reward point by making a purchase worth over $1000 Garrett dollars in value, which earned him a print on his player con shirt (made by the incredible GM, Hadar), but cost him his soul. The Xzar penthouse he purchased, as it was named, was donated for the next 2 runs’ use.
Run 2: Sellout #
Grumdrig, Grunk Bunkley III, Meridian, Morvagor, "Rig", Sha, and Whimple entered into the Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse) to do further investigation in an "external audit" of the place and its security. The party explored the casino, finding much entertainment, luxury, and relaxation but less safety than they had hoped.
The party discovered that the employees of the KWG, besides the Iron Company, were all ghosts of an ancient Cathedral of Kantanon, now working for the KWG as loyal employees. Krieg W. Garrett, they further found out, was an ancient 1300 year old devil, who had abilities over souls and contracts.
The party confronted Henry Frick, who was destroying evidence of his involvement in the Chef Gil affair in the administrative offices of the KWG. They managed to force him down, and Miles Nelson entered and allowed for them to de-escalate the situation.
With the advise of Kibble on entrances into the underground, they explored deeper into the Cathedral and unlocked a sealed door by KWG, where they found a secret. A secret so terrrible they could not speak it. Horus. The Guardian. The secret would be revealed later, in time. They barely escaped the Cathedral with their lives.
The KWGR&C(+B) failed the audit, to say the least.
Run 3: Casino Royale #
Ardoval Wentrup, Brither Eru, Quartz, Ravyn Steelfeather, Rols Teair, and The Inspector entered into the Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse) on Gold Week, the critical business period for the Casino for the KWG, when the wealthiest gamblers of the Spires came to gamble at the KWG Casino. They were tasked with ensuring nothing went wrong with the festivities and gambling, and its wealthy clients were satisfied.
Speaking with Miss Caroline, she mentioned that Mabel Attatok, plaza manager and chief gardener of the KWG, had lately become despondent, and had been avoiding discussion with her for some time. She asked for the party to speak with her and inquire about this, and so they did. Finding her in the guest Plaza, she was struggling to get a small potted plant to grow, the first of many she was to plant today. When the party suggested that, as a druid, it was her frustrated and upset emotional state that was causing the plant’s inability to grow, she snapped angrily and left in a puff. However, Rols Teair followed up with her and attempted to console her. She was upset with Miss Caroline’s secrecy regarding the KWG’s affairs, and something more. A Nat20 insight check led Rols to a situation he never could’ve expected, as she accidentally possessed him (she, like the others, a ghost), fusing their souls temporarily. While she briefly viewed his memories of his cold judge father, a subsequent Nat 100 on a d100 roll led him to see many of her memories. He saw her awakened by KWG; he saw her meet Miss Caroline a day later as Miss Caroline awoke; he saw her and Miss Caroline getting their regular coffee together, reading together, and falling in love together. But with a Nat100, he saw a deeper memory—something locked away from even her: a memory from before she was a ghost. She saw her watching Miss Caroline burn at stake, creating the recognizable burn scar on Miss Caroline’s mouth, and joy upon the face of the watching Mabel Attatok.
Mabel Attatok was horrified by seeing this memory; absolute confusion and horror at both the act and the joy she felt at seeing such an act. She wondered what it could mean, and left the party distraught.
The party then met with Henry Frick, who proved troublesome. Immediately, he kidnapped Rols and held him hostage—Rols’s father had sentenced him to prison (which he had fled) and he demanded a letter for his father seeking a pardon. The party compromised to secure his release, unable to face the numerous Iron Company mercenaries and Miles Nelson facing them, and he allowed Rols to go free, but took his soul as collateral with a soul contract. After this, Henry Frick became more amicable and allowed them to speak with his forensic scientist, Kai Shark.
Kai Shark, as it turned out, was a merperson: specifically an angler fish. Surprised at the party’s entrance into her laboratory, she accidentally set off her esca and hypnotized the party—with the exception of The Inspector, who’s Nat 20 on a wisdom save for her charm led to him reversing the effect on her. His powerful skills at charm resistance, and his shared background in detective work, led to her having a keen interest in him. She gladly agreed to share her info, as she revealed the possessed were taken over by brain waves of a powerful psyonic creature. She revealed the afflicted worsened over time as the effect became permanent, and that ghosts were the chief instrument of the creature. Kai Shark also turned out to be the daughter of the head of the KWG casino, Card Shark—a bulking, 9’ shark merperson)—who wanted her to drop her “dead-end career in forensic science” for a real job: gambling.
The party then began to work at the Casino. Henry Frick attempted to make a deal with them to rig the cards in his favor so he could win back his losses to Krieg (who he felt humiliated by his debt to) and finally pay off his debt. However, hating Frick and wanting to see Rols’s soul returned, they decided to rig it against him. Rols met with Mabel Attatok, who agreed to help him win back his soul while she dealt with the fate of her own. Winning great sums of cash throughout the Casino, they finally played against Henry Frick. Henry Frick lost thousands of dollars to them, thanks to Mabel’s distraction and their sleight of hand allowing them to cheat against his cheating. With Rols’ soul on the line, Brother Eru bet their own soul. They lost.
Henry Frick now owned two souls. The Inspector managed to make a play with his own, but lost as well. Luckily, The Inspector was not his true name so he loopholed his way out of the soul contract (although an unfortunate individual out there lost their soul in his place). With this, Henry Frick laughed and left three souls in hand.
It was then the attack began. While the party was distracted by attempting to resore Rols's and Eru's souls, Card Shark had become possessed. The fight began as customers fled the casino, and the party were battered by the bruising bouncer. Using powerful slot machine randomizers, Card Shark managed to flood the Casino with water, allowing him unmatched swim speed, surprise attack, and advantages against the party in the water, leading the party to attempt to balance on precarious floating slot machines and casino boards while they battled the beast. Brother Eru managed to use turn undead against him, using his undead status against him, and The Inspector stunned him with a powerful charm ability. It was then the party realized with horror the entrance of Kai Shark into the battle--the forensic anglerfish now possessed.
Kai Shark began wreaking havoc using possession on the party, charming Brother Eru into dropping his turn undead and awakening Card Shark from The Inspector's charm, but what Horus could not have expected was The Inspector's charm. Using Countercharm to aid the rest of his party, The Inspector managed to repeatedly Nat20 saving throws against her charm, as her real self began to fight back against the possession, as truer feelings for The Inspector were revealed (perhaps "truer feelings" in two senses). The party won the fight, with Ravyn and Quartz managing to drain the casino's water and turning the fight against the Shark family. In the end, Card Shark and Kai Shark were defeated and the possession knocked out of them.
The Sharks informed the party immediately the truth: they were turned into possession by the trickery of Henry Frick. Kai Shark managed to find his fingerprints all over the disappearances of Phyllis, Gerald, and Chef Gil, and revealed he was helping Horus possess members of the KWG. The party rushed out to tell Krieg W. Garrett himself, only to find something terrible:
The Henry Frick Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse): A Fricking Awesome Experience
Using the possessions to distract Krieg W. Garrett and the forces of Hireling Hall, Henry Frick had managed to coup Krieg W. Garrett while he was distracted on a project elsewhere, and had used the Iron Company to take complete control over the facility. He used electric shock collars on ghost employees to enforce compliance. The party's winnings from the casino invalid, the party left in distraught as Henry Frick plotted his next move to secure his position.
The party also learned the ultimate secret from Brother Eru: Hours, The Guardian, was actually an Elder Brain, sealed within the depths of the catacombs of the Cathedral of Kantanon the KWG was build upon. And it was ANGRY.
As a side note, the party gave Kibble a powerful magical item from Card Shark called "Blackjack" and promised him he would become the Chosen One. He swore to them he would. This will be important later.
Run 4: We're Fricked #
Captain Storm, Duster, Growler von Dunkle, Soogal, Thimble, Lady Killigrew, and Zara Mossveil entered the Henry Frick Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse), as Henry Frick requested Hireling Hall members to assist him with a daring mission. With his success at collaring the ghosts of the R&C(+B), Frick wanted to put a collar on the most powerful creature there: the Elder Brain. Doing this, Frick promised that he'd use "his" Elder Brain to help fight the Green. He gave the party the ultimate responsibility of invading the catacombs and collaring the beast.
The party rode in on a pirate airship hired by Henry Frick, who was a raging, insecure lunatic that burst into violent rage at the very mention of his former employer, Krieg W. Garrett, who he felt humiliated by. Hidden with the party was Kibble, the friendly kobold, who hid away in a box to avoid Frick's violence.
The party prepared in the Henry Frick R&C(+B), but there they began to have a change of heart about their mission. They were greeted at the desk by the demoted Miss Caroline, who wore a shock collar and worked the desk in Joel Stanch's former position. She was depressed at Krieg's disappearance and scared for the fate of her friends and her girlfriend, Mabel Attatok. Worse, she told them that "Henry Frick is going to get us all killed"--that his plan to use the Elder Brain would be at the expense of the KWG ghosts being turned into possessed monsters, losing their minds and spirits to Horus.
The party encountered many Iron Company employees raiding the casino, bedazzled in KWG merch and gift shop items, as well as hoardes of pirates hired by Henry Frick as air support, who parked huge pirate airships outside. They met over lunch at the Henry Frick Culinary Experience with Cesare Heathcliffe, Henry Frick's daughter and former KWG external investments advisor, who told them of her involvement in the creation of the Interspire Krieg W. Garrett Flaming Resort & Casino (+Hotsprings) in the Dragon Temple (which was going to keep its name, as it held on as a bastion of KWG loyalists). The party met with Miles Nelson as well, who was head of security under Frick; Miles's background became revealed in a series of letters they and other investigators discovered hidden in stashed-away letters throughout the casino.
The party was asked by Caroline to find Mabel Attatok, who had gone missing after being "fired" by Henry Frick. They found her in a mirror maze called the Mirror Zone, stuck inside a small handheld magic mirror a pirate captain had gifted Henry Frick. They managed to trick Joel Stanch, Henry Frick's chief collaborator and the person who had sealed Mabel Attatok inside the mirror, into taking her place in the mirror by reciting the magic words in orcish.
It was then that a team of adventurers from Shovel Skull Spire entered into the picture, as they flew to the Spire of Kantanon seeking the presence of Kodo Torro, a literal silver fox (see Matthew's runs) who was of great interest to them. He was in a meeting with Henry Frick, who attempted to negotiate to continue Kodo Torro's shared business agreement under Krieg W. Garrett under his ownership of the R&C(+B). The Shovel Skull Spire party impressed Henry Frick with a magic show and managed to gain his attention (they were his first and only guests, after all, in his insecure effort to prove himself the better man over Krieg W. Garrett), while the party made a move to betray Henry Frick by stealing his keys from his desk. What those keys unlocked? A massive cargo airship.
As the Shovel Skull Spire team spoke with Kodo Torro, who was accidentally returned his super-weapon by a clueless Henry Frick, the party made their way to the harbor, where Captain Storm disguised as Henry Frick and got him and the party onto his cargo ship. Another section of the party made their way down a secret elevator, using the information of Mabel Attatok, that led to an underground laboratory personally ran and operated by Krieg W. Garrett. The missing Krieg W. Garrett was revealed, and he had built a superweapon eldritch cannon (easily twice the size of the Hireling Hall building irl), shaped like a giant cylinder. Upon learning of Henry Frick's betrayal and cruelty towards the ghosts of the R&C(+B), and the change of the logo, he drained himself to power the eldritch cannon and told the party to use it to stop him. They would do so to spectacular effect.
Captain Storm's men took the unarmed cargo airship down to the level of the secret lab. The team inside the secret lab then powered the eldritch cannon into use to blow a hole in the rockwall, which alerted the pirate airships who began to pursue the parties. The secret lab team used the massive collar meant for enslaving the Elder Brain on the Eldritch Cannon, and the cargo ship used carry-runes to carry the Eldritch Cannon as a part of the ship. The two teams united on board, and began their battle against the pirate airships and Iron Company.
The pirates began to fire upon the cargo ship, but in a powerful display of force the party utilized the Eldritch Cannon to obliterate an enemy pirate ship, the Xyborz. The explosive blast could be heard throughout the Spires. Soogal gave a terrifying cry against the pirates that caused them to flee. The party then encountered an encampment of Iron Company soldiers led by Henry Frick, who attempted to build a land-air defense system of ballistas. But the party was fast, and their aim was deadly. Growler wore a ballista he had been given earlier by Henry Frick, and rode on the back of Lady Killigrew, who's steelweaver spiderback system allowed her to carry him onto the bottom of the airship, getting him into position to fire. And fire he did. As Henry Frick began to order his men to take defensive positions, he was met with the sight of a ballista bolt fired directly at him.
As he realized these moments would be his last, he heard the terrifying words of Lady Killigrew: "HENRY FRICK, YOU ARE MADE OF BLOOD AND UNFINISHED LEATHER!!!" Half a second later, a ballista bolt slammed through Henry Frick's heart (as little a target as that may of been) and impaled him into a wall. His last words "oh frick..."
Brother Eru and Rols were finally released from their soul contracts.
As the Iron Company fled, the party began to return to the R&C(+B), but something collided with and tore a hole through their airship: Miles Nelson. With the last person he had in his life left killed, he began a suicidal attack on the airship, attempting to take it down and perhaps him with it. He began to clash with the party, shadowstepping and using his martial arts to carve his way to the pilot's deck. However, Captain Storm was still disguised as Henry Frick, and a stunned Miles Nelson was convinced that this was all a plot by his uncle. He began to desperately attempt to repair the ship with the rest of the party.
As the airship rapidly crashed into the Green, they began to desperately attempt to repair the ship. WIth Soogal managing to activate a parachute, they slowed their descent but the Green's tendrils began to reach out to the lethally crashing ship, but it was enough time to make repairs. Well, enough time for Zara, anyway. Utilizing a "hangover in a cup" that gave the user 3 actions in a turn at the expense of 0 hp at end of turn, Zara utilized leatherworking skills in order to rapidly repair the ship's balloon and save the day. The day was saved, and they managed to catch the unconscious Zara with Miles's help.
They returned to the liberated Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse), with KWG returned to power, to great celebration. Krieg W. Garrett donated the eldritch cannon to the cause of his good friend Della of the Steelweavers, for use in their ultimate weapon (he kept his own copy of it, though, as he was a good enough friend of her to know he should not give her such a weapon without keeping one for himself).
The party returned victoriously to Hireling Hall. Captain Storm and his crew were granted a gift by Krieg W. Garrett: Henry Frick's cargo ship, to be used in their new airship clan. They named it The Gryphon.
Run 5: Cathedral of Kantanon #
The Cathedral of Kantanon saw KWG gain the aid of Ji ji, Ken Valcrane, Toland the Tome Wyrm, and Vagra, in order to defeat the Elder Brain Horus. They were joined by Kibble, the kobold adventurer, who was excited to meet Toland and Vagra, two fellow kobolds.
Preparing for their expedition, the party split to prepare in and enjoy the R&C(+B). Ken went to the Tiki Bar, where he drank his heart out--upset about his parents--and agreed to Card Shark's request to disguise himself as Della, a respected figure to Kai Shark, to try to convince Kai Shark to get into gambling (this did not work, although Ken's words about how special it is to have a caring parental figure did). On the subject of parental figures, Vagra visited the waterpark with the 5-year-old Kibble, who she watched over, and left after Kibble became terrified of KLAMY the Clam, the horrific mascot of the KWG waterpark. Meanwhile Ji Ji took their first bath in years, and Toland beat the world record in the escape room in just 22 seconds (no cheating was involved here haha).
As the Elder Brain began to exert influence, the party ventured into the cathedral, at last, as KWG warned them they'd learn some terrible stuff about him in there. His last words "I feel like all of this is going to come to an end soon... whatever you find in there, know that I cared--I always did care", rang in their head.
The party awoke from a dream about Miles's past memories to find intellect devourers stuck to their face in the dungeon, feeding off their minds. They began a dizzying expedition throughout the Cathedral, learning of KWG's past (an innkeeper's son who's religious abuse led him to seek revenge against the Cathedral of Kantanon, creating the KWG as a way to mock and replace it). They then found the body of the prophet who founded the Cathedral of Kantanon: Vivvia. The first body of the temple.
They entered Vivvia's mind. They found themselves in the ancinet town of Kantanon, before the Green, as an inquisitor spoke to them. She told them to gather religious leaders from other towns, for a trial was to happen tonight. Most strangely, this inquisitor looked exactly like Mabel Attatok, the chief gardener & plaza manager of the KWG (and Miss Caroline's gf), but she called herself Accorsa Oakes, and had a dark, zealous demeanor. They realized they were going through the past, experiencing the pre-ghost lives and memories of the KWG employees. They followed Accorsa's demands, and found who was on trial: Vivvia. Vivvia was a "false prophet", according to the Luddite zealot Accorsa Oakes, for leading a new sect of the Gaian faith that claimed the Luddites plan to create the Green would entomb and harm Gaia, speaking out against it. Vivvia, as it turned out, was Miss Caroline.
The following scene played out exactly as Rols' vision of it in Mabel Attatok's mind showed: a stoic Miss Caroline (Vivvia) gaining a burn scar from being burned at stake by Mabel Attatok (Accorsa Oakes). The party returned to the present, with a reawakened, burned and mummified corpse of Vivvia. Not just was the ancient Vivvia awakened, who began to fuse minds and memories with Miss Caroline, but the Elder Brain was as well. They encountered the deadly Elder Brain, enraged at their invasion its temple and seeming harm of Vivvia, its favorite tomb.
The battle began, and each round the Elder Brain erased a piece of a party member. Ji Ji lost their whimsy. Ken lost their love. Kibble lost their mercy. Krieg W. Garrett lost their capitalism. The Elder Brain battled them all, erasing who they were more and more as they began to lose hope.
In the process of this, as a side note, Kibble was convinced he was actually a red fire dragon of the Flaming Temple, as he managed to breath fire thanks to Toland's dragonsbreath magic. This will be important later.
The battle went on, and at one point Kibble attempted firebreath without Toland's magic and rolled a Nat 20 on a "believe in yourself" check, and he actually managed to breathe fire. So, uh, yeah he's a red fire dragon from the Flaming Temple. This will be important later.
The battle ended in one final attack. As the Elder Brain absorbed the "Dream" "Love" and "Capitalism" aspects of self it had taken from party members and NPCs throughout the fight, it absorbed it into its own personality to become the American Dream. This lasted about a round, before Ken lobotomized it. With this, the Elder Brain was defeated.
But one last loose end was to be filled: Vivvia, alone in the darkness of the crypt and with an identity crisis of two minds combined (Miss Caroline and Vivvia), the door to the Green was left undefended by the now dead Horus, and the Green spillled in, corrupting Vivvia and beginning its path out of the winding catacombs to launch an all out strike on the KWG.
Upstairs, Krieg W. Garrett's employees regained thier past memories, causing Mabel Attatok/Accorsa Oakes to launch into despair at her own evil--both because she was wrong about her beliefs about Gaia and because she murdered the woman she loved. The other employees, souls freed from KWG contracts after KWG was pressed into their release as they no longer trusted him and wished not to work under him any further.
As the party left to return to Hireling Hall, Kibble joined them. He had finally found a mom and dad with Toland & Vagra, who loved him very much. Kibble's arc was completed... or was it? This will be important later.
Run 6: No More Deals #
B'Huh'Dunk Thugglington, Grunk Bunkley III, Ravaxas Ur, Rigimothy "Rig" Kriglebrunt, Rols Teair, Ulzor Stonefinger, and The Inspector entered into the Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse) for one last mission. Krieg W. Garrett needed their aid against the corrupted Vivvia and army of the Green, soon to emerge from the catacombs of the Cathedral of Kantanon, and needed them to rally his former employees against the threat as they could no longer trust him. The party split into teams, each seeking the aid of the employees they knew best.
Rols Teair went to Mabel Attatok, who had fallen into despair since her revelations of her past as Accorsa Oakes. But with wise words and a Nat 20 check to comfort her (after previous Nat 20 and Nat 100 to do so), Rols proved himself the truest of friend to Mabel Attatok. He convinced her whole-heartedly of who she was: the person who would save Miss Caroline. She possessed him, fusing their souls together, and granting him Danny Phantom-esque ghost abilities of intangibility and posession of mechanical devices.
The Inspector and Ravaxas went to Kai Shark, who was ecstatic to fight by The Inspector's side, and brought her father Card Shark into the fray. The Inspector and Kai Shark fused, while Card Shark possessed Ravaxas.
The rest of the party went to Miles Nelson and Chef Gil. They presented Miles Nelson with the letters Henry Frick had kept from him, and gave him hope that he could still make things right and one day "learn to swim", as the Cathedral of Kantanon party had once told him in his memories. They convinced him to call in his friends from Shovel Skull Spire: Eve, Mark, and Alice, to come to the aid of Kantanon. They also convinced Chef Jeff "Gil" Krill to aid them in the fight, along with his line cooks and the army of rats that were allies of Kibble and The Inspector's pet rat, Jose.
The fight was one of the most chaotic things I've ever ran, so I'll do my best to describe its events:
The attack began with Vivvia possessing a tree that began to be chopped away at by Grunk III and others. They then ran into an issue--Miles Nelson reported an airship attacking the Casino, which The Inspector and Rig ran to meet. The airship was operated by the ghost of Henry Frick, corrupted by the Green, who wanted revenge on the party and KWG for his death. The Inspector's rat, Jose, led a counterattack with an earth elemental that burrowed inside the ship and destroyed its ballistas and engine. Henry Frick shot his rat in the face, as dramatic music played and it gave one last salute to The Inspector (it would be revived tomorrow--it's a familiar--but have some drama). The Inspector was shot by a remaining ballista and dragged onto the ship by Henry Frick, and the two battled as it crashed, sailing through walls of the resort&casino(+bathhouse) as it crashed and fighting throughout the outer perimeter of the KWG.
Grunk managed to chop down Corrupted Vivvia's angry tree, revealing a cavern entrance to the catacombs below. Krieg W. Garrett was eaten by a giant mimic of a trapdoor, which then also ate Ravaxas, and plunged themselves into a mimic-dungeon and tunnel system they explored through. B'Huh'Dunk summoned a rat army and chef army to carry a ballista, with intent to use it against Henry Frick and his ship. The rats controlled the chefs like Ratatouille style, carrying the ballista as an army together. Ulzor entered into the pit and faced a massive venus fly trap monster called Venus, guarding the corrupted Vivvia.
Meanwhile Henry Frick's ship crashed now into the Gil-Garrett Culinary Experience, as The Inspector and Henry Frick continued to battle. The fight began to intensify, as Rig joined the fight onboard. The Inspector managed to gain an opening to use Kai Shark's charm ability to cause Henry Frick to hallucinate, and gave him the nightmarish illusions of a worker's union on board the ship. The horrific sight of workers' rights caused Henry Frick to act as any sane man would: throwing himself off the boat in horror and dying in the Green below.
Returning to the Venus cavern, B'Huh'Dunk's rat-chef-ballista army found an employee named "Gabe Higbee" and strapped an anti-green air thinning bomb to him. They used the ballista to launch him into the jaws of Venus, as dramatic music played. Gabe Higbee was not a familiar, so his death was permanent (I thought).
Back at the mimic tunnels, Rols was able to slay and cut in half the mimic trapdoor. This restored and upgraded ghost abilities, which allowed them to resummon Gabe Higbee. The DM was not pleased. Further down the tunnels, Krieg W. Garrett and Ravaxas encountered a swarm of Green spores, which Ravaxas was able to counter with his Green-proof mask but Krieg W. Garrett accidentally inhaled. As Krieg W. Garrett began to turn, Ravaxas began a mad dash to escape.
Heading back again to the airship, The Inspector and Rig desperately attempted to steer the ship towards the docking bay of the KWG, which they managed to accomplish (partially crashing thorugh the Gil-Garrett Culinary Experience) but at speeds far too high. They were careening towards an angry Corrupted Vivvia, who had fled the tunnels after Venus's defeat. The ship was sure to be corrupted by contact with her, but luckily, Miles Nelson was able to slow the crashing ship enough to dock it. But the sudden braking caused The Inspector to fail a strength save (but Nat 20 an acrobatics check) and collide with Corrupted Vivvia, launching the two of them into a freefall from the top of the Spire.
B'Huh'Dunk and Rols entered through the caverns into the docking bay with the army and ballista. They planned to use it against Corrupted Vivvia and her forces, and B'Huh'Dunk used levitate on the ballista (taking the rat army with him on board the floating ballista) while Rols used his newfound ghost powers to possess the broken airship. Rig was able to repair the ship and bring it back to sailing condition, and the two launched out with a chef army manning the guns.
Back at the mimic tunnels, Krieg W. Garrett became corrutped by the Green, and was about to give chase to Ravaxas and head to his superweapon to use against them, but was intercepted by Ulzor Stonefingers. Ulzor launched boulders at him, as the two battled in the caverns, and Krieg W. Garrett snapped and launched a massive lava blast at him. But Ulzor had a trick up his sleeve: he utilized the "Hot Saucer" he gained from the chefs--a pan that instantly boiled any liquid it touched into gas--and used it on the molten rock to avoid taking any damage. Corrupted Krieg W. Garrett was stunned at this, but moved to finish off the pesky Ulzor.
Meanwhile, The Inspector and Corrupted Vivvia continued to dive through freefall, battling in the sky. Corrupted Vivvia attacked The Inspector with Time Ravage/Made in Heaven, which aged him back into a pre-teen, but The Inspector was clever. He readied an action, and then utilized the spell blink, which sent him into the ethereal plane. The Inspector had realized that Miss Caroline was a ghost, and thus existed on the ethereal plane, while the Green was fully material and had no soul, and thus did not exist on the ethereal plane; upon entering the ethereal plane, The Inspector reached out to Miss Caroline and used his sect technique to remove her corruption. The Inspector managed to save Miss Caroline, but was it too late? The two were still in open freefall.
Grunk Bunkley III reached the office of Krieg W. Garrett, seeking a way to fight back against the incoming Green onslaught as the forces in Kantanon-proper were beat back. He found the central control panel for the KWG, and unlocked an elevator for Ravaxas, which allowed him entrance into the Eldritch Cannon laboratory. He also made a call for air support from Hireling Hall, but none arrived--they would have to beat them back alone. Well, not completely alone. With the words "I'm Just Looking for an adventure", he summoned Quyst, who would give aid throughout the fight.
Meanwhile, Krieg W. Garrett and Ulzor continued their battle. Krieg W. Garrett's attacks were powerful, but Ulzor had a genius trick up his sleeve. Ulzor had brought with him the "hangover in a cup", the drink that gave the user 3 actions in a turn at the cost of reducing you to 0hp which Zara had used to great effect earlier, but he didn't plan on drinking it. No, instead, he force fed it to Krieg W. Garrett, with the strength score bonus provided by Ravaxas's Card Shark ability. Krieg W. Garrett would be reduced to 0hp, but he would have to survive his onslaught first. Krieg W. Garrett utilized Time Ravage/Made in Heaven to punch Ulzor in the gut so hard he turned into a baby, who he then used dominate person to turn evil, and then used his third action to use Time Ravage/Made in Heaven against to turn Ulzor back into an adult, this time now having grown up evil since a baby. But with that, Krieg W. Garrett was reduced to 0 hp and the Green was knocked out of him. Ulzor was able to regain his goodness, as Krieg W. Garrett's power waned.
The Inspector and Caroline, now in freefall, were about to be grabbed by the tendrils of the Green, as they neared the bottom of their descent. But just in the knick of time Rig and Rols (still possessing the airship) sailed down with tremendous speed and got into range of The Inspector's dimension door, snatching them from the jaws of the Green. They began to sail up, but the Green came with them, seeking revenge and the recorruption of the Gaian prophet.
Meanwhile, Ravaxas had discovered the copy of the Krieg W. Garrett Eldritch Cannon in the laboratory below, thanks to Grunk III. They swiftly acted to activate it, but realized it needed 3 people to turn on and a power source. Miles Nelson and Grunk III arrived in time to activate it, but it still needed a power source.
Now here is why I kept telling you "this will be impotant later"
Kibble, now having been revaled to be a premature baby Red Fire Dragon and prophecized as the Chosen One in Run 3, arrived. They stepped into the Eldritch Cannon and used their draconic power to become its power source. This was enough power to supercharge the cannon, and they blasted a hole in the wall. They finally had a weapon that could defeat the Green.
The eldritch cannon began to descend the slope, as the floating ballista and ghost airship teams provided cover fire. The Inspector made another huge play with Kai's hallucination power, and convinced the Green that it was in oil and salt, things it hated, and drew it towards ascending the spire and funnelling itslef into the blast radius of the eldritch cannon. The eldritch cannon team rapidly slid down the spire as they faced all the Green in the region barrelling towards them, but faced a problem: Ravaxas failed a strength save to hold onto the activation lever and couldn't pull it in time.
The cannon became surrounded by Green, and the Green began to move to grab and corrupt Kibble, the dragon and power source of the cannon. Things looked grimm, and time was running out. But B'Huh'Dunk's response was decisive.
The plan was 3 part, and executed as follows:
-
Buh'Huh'Dunk used two of the ghost ship’s chef-manned repaired ballista to launch his personal floating rat-manned second ballista into the Green surrounding the cannon.
-
The rat-manned ballista then fired their last anti-green air-thinning bomb, which was manned by a singular rat.
-
As dramatic music played, this rat activated the bomb, and was destoryed. All saluted to the rat as it made the ultimate sacrifice.
(The dramatic music in all of these instances was As the World Caves In, by the way)
The opening provided by the explosion provided Rols room to move towards the Eldritch Cannon and possess it, and as the final PC was able to activate the eldritch cannon, an eplosive blast could be heard throughout the entire Spires, as it obliterated all of the Green in Kantanon.
Epilogue: #
Unfortuantely, in the aftermath of the explosion the party members in the eldritch cannon fell about a mile and crash landed. We time skipped to a hospital room in cartoon-style full body casts.
B'Huh'Dunk, Rig, and Ulzor founded the Thuglington-Stonefingers-Kriglebrunt Resort-Casino-Drive Thru-Ghostcoin Exchange (+Bathhouse), who gave the following speech:
They had bought out Krieg W. Garrett, who had filed for bankruptcy after the damage repairs and loss of employees. They continued to run and operate their new establishment for 1300 years, until they had to deal with the Blue Crisis.
Grunk Bunkley III had finally gained revenge on the Green for the loss of his family. However, throughout the course of the fight, he had finally reached corruption level 7. In a tragic twist of fate, he had become corrupted by the force he swore to destroy. He later turned into a corrupted Green monster, and the party reunited to put him out of his misery. Finally, he could be at peace.
Every employee of the KWG would go on to attend his funeral.
Rols Teair took a stretch, smiled, and sheathed his sword again. He bid farewell to the KWG and took a cable car back to the Spires. This was one adventure he certainly would never forget, but it wouldn’t be his last.
He went on to continue his adventuring life over the years, a hero of the Spires and one of the first of the newly reclaimed “Valleys”. He would remain in touch with Mabel Attatok, who still looked to his guidance on life advice, considering him her closest friend.
Ravaxas Ur made a deal with Krieg W. Garrett, and fulfilled it by allowing Krieg W. Garrett to travel the land with his daughter-figure, Caroline Vivvia. Ravaxas was proud of the work he did, although rather concerned about the business plans of the new owners of the former-KWG.
The Inspector closed the mysterious case of the Krieg W. Garrett. But this wouldn’t be his last. And now, it seemed he had some new allies on his investigating team.
Kai Shark joined The Inspector as his forensic scientist and, more than that, as his girlfriend.
Card Shark joined the crew, ready to finally bet on his daughter and not just the cards.
The three formed a traveling airship investigative team, with a forensic science lab and casino onboard. They went on to travel and go on Scooby doo-style adventures together in the new post-Green world.
NPC Epilogues: #
- Miles Appleton Nelson’s hospital bill was paid for by The Inspector. And as he recovered, he was visited by three people he never thought he’d see again: Eve, Mark, and Alice. He had a lot of explaining and work to do, but for now, the first time in years, Miles Appleton Nelson had hope.
- (Kai Shark and Card Shark see above)
- Joel Stanch was eventually released from the mirror. He decided to finally die and go to the afterlife. He went on to annoy everyone in the afterlife.
- Kibble found his parents with Toland and Vagra. He was raised in a happy home, and never gave up his Kibble-energy. He was also a dragon.
- Oros became a philosopher
- Chef Gil founded a ratatouille-esque rat restaurant
- Cesare Heathcliffe went broke without Henry Frick or her job. She lived with her cousin Miles Nelson for some time, and she made her awkward return to the Fire Temple to seek their forgiveness for the Solthar affair
- The Iron Company became an adventuring group under Miles Nelson. They found it actually paid better, lol
- Mabel Attatok and Caroline’s love won out in the end. They were later married, and started a family together. Rols was the godfather.
- Krieg W. Garrett and Caroline Attatok resolved to never go into business again, and traveled the spires together with Mabel Attatok. Caroline forces him to attend church with her and Krieg forces her to gamble with him. They would go on to form the Caroline Vivvia Charityworks & Temple (+Bathhouse). You can guess who run which part.
Currently, Krieg W. Garrett can be found living in Della Grish’s basement, going through steelweaver training to better serve the Caroline Vivvia Charityworks & Temple (+Bathhouse).
And finally, with that, that is the end of the story of the Krieg W. Garrett Resort & Casino (+Bathhouse).
